Zanth eyed the men before him warily. They claimed to be Elders, Changelings who had served their charges until the end. It was the end part that concerned Zanth, because it wasn’t the Elder’s end, it was the death of the one they were supposed to protect.

“So, let me get this straight,” he said, staring incredulously at the men. “You get the rank of Elder if the person you are charged with protecting dies?”

Seriously. This was his life. Where he now needed to have things like this defined.

“Not exactly,” Elder Wesley explained with a smirk. “We are appointed our position under many circumstances. Firstly, we must be of a certain age. Secondly, in most cases our charge may die of old age. Changelings live much longer than that of even the average Mage.”

“And the other cases?”

A sadness washed over Elder Wesley, so tangible Zanth swore he could feel it himself. “There are cases, like mine with your father. I had served your father since he was a child, protected him, and loved him. But he was always so brave...to a fault.”

He watched the other man pace, as if consumed with thoughts of the past. Knowing nothing of his parents, only flashes coming to mind when he struggled to remember, Zanth had no idea what kind of wounds he might be opening. His eyes darted to Liam’s for some sort of direction, but even he appeared affected.

“They day your father died, we lost a lot of our Guardians as well. Malcolm’s attack was brutal and unexpected.” Zanth remained quiet as Elder Wesley took a seat next to him on the couch. “I had already been working with the Elder Council in preparation for when I would join them. Malcolm took out all our leaders. With your father gone and my experience, I had no choice but to step in. My first order was to issue you your own Guardian. My son.”

Liam’s hand slipped into his own and Zanth squeezed tight. “With a target painted on my back, you placed your son in harm’s way?”

Wesley chuckled. “My son is stronger than you know, Aurelius. He is the son of two Changelings. Practically unheard. He is faster, stronger. We still don’t know the limit of his power, and may never.”

Ignoring the use of his apparent real name by the Elder, he turned to face Liam. “You aren’t very forthcoming with information, are you?”

“Haven’t exactly had a lot of time,” Liam muttered, having the decency to blush though refusing to meet his gaze.

“I think it’s more of a misuse of time,” Wesley injected.

A few sniggers met that comment and it was Zanth’s turn to blush. At least this time he had pants on.

“Regardless, it seems to have been the right decision, given the circumstances,” Wesley added.

“Circumstances?”

“You and Liam are mates. You may not entirely know what that means, but trust me when I say it is important.”

“Wait. They’re what?” one of the Elder’s shouted abruptly. “This could change things.”

“That was kind of the point I was getting to,” Wesley drawled.
